The work was completed in three stages to provide early possession to the school.
This project involved the partial demolition of the existing building with a portion of the structure remaining and construction of a new 3600m2 building. The facilities in the new building consisted of large retail area, bakery, flower room, cool rooms, fridges and freezers, food preparation areas, mezzanine offices, coffee shop, staff and public amenities, kitchen, covered deliveries area and mechanical services plant compound.
The building structure consists of mainly structural steel frame throughout with concrete tilt panel walls on the boundary, with timber stud framed infill clad with Hardies Scyon weatherboard and lined timber stud walls internally.
There were many challenges that were overcome on this project including; extremely tight 7 month construction program which was met even with considerable and significant variations throughout construction, working with and coordinating various specialist trades and nominated subcontractors to meet the programme. Also, the site was located on a busy intersection which restricted access and required continual coordination of trades and material deliveries to overcome.

Civilcon successfully tendered and was selected to construct the new Jewel Cave Visitor Centre in Augusta. The company was responsible for the entire project which involved construction of the new circular visitor centre, new cave entrance and demolition of the existing facilities. The visitor centre incorporates an interpretive centre and café and dining facilities with ablutions. The building has been backfilled to give the illusion of being part of the landscape.
The circular building is unique in its design. A combination of materials was used including rammed limestone walls, tilt panel and brickwork. The cave access way was constructed with tilt panel walls and an in-situ concrete roof which is partially underground. A green roof is over the main visitor centre which required application of a strict waterproofing system. Recycled jarrah floor boards were used through the main floor area.
The unique design of the building and this particular site presented many challenges that were overcome throughout construction. Some challenges included:
Civilcon completed extensive renovations and additions to the existing Recreation Centre. The work included new dressing rooms, group fitness area, and an extension to the existing gym, a new crèche and new mezzanine office to the pool area. The centre was fully functional throughout construction.

Fit-out work, although not in the contract, was carried out before completion and was co-ordinated with Civilcon to reduce the overall timeframe for occupancy.
The tilt panel building occupies all four boundaries of the site. Tilt panels were cast on site. The site restrictions of an inner city development were overcome including protecting vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Site co-ordination was vital in the success of this project.
The 2700sqm building is constructed with a concrete frame and pre-cast concrete tilt panel walls. The 3rd level is framed with structural steel and clad with Comtex and Exotec sheeting.
